Peter has always been captivating and a strong leader but I saw those skills at their best while we worked together at his law firm (StThomasLegal.com) (shameless plugs do not stop once he became a judge). I would sit in and listen to appointments with some of his Guardian et Litem clients (usually kids that are in the middle of heated or contested custody battles, modifications or orders of protections) and the patience he would share and the connections he would make with the kids was simply this: genuine.
Peter spent time with these clients, asked questions, helped them understand his role as their GAL and also the court process. He focused his energy on defending those kids and fought for each one to have his/her BEST LIFE given the situation that was out of their control. He encouraged them to be the best people they could be and helped them understand that they do not have to let the discord of the family life within them instilling internal discord as well. He listened. He encouraged. He saw them as they were and wanted to instill in them confidence and courage. He gave them book suggestions. Shared some of his favorite movies (that were age appropriate). He gave them tools to help when situations brought them pain or anxiety. My experience as an observer was one of great joy. Peter thrived in that role and now as a judge he will continue to share his heart, his experience and guide in the ways of the law.
Being an active observer in his new life as a judge has allowed me to see him talk with parents and not be afraid to help them see how their actions now can change so much within their children. He works hard to see each case on its own merits and where he can bring clarity and focus for the families in his court.
I have heard this quote a few times... The best thing you can do for your kids, simply be home with them and love them.
Thank you for reading. I hope that you can offer a quick prayer for Peter and his work on the bench so that he can uphold the law, guide families and strengthen our community.
