Starting on the right foot
By: Judge Peter A. Lassiter
I hit ground sprinting by having dockets my first week as a Judge in October 2024, but this week I had the great opportunity to attend the New Judge Orientation Conference. It's a Conference for newly elected or appointed Associate Circuit or Circuit Judges. Simply- to start on the right foot and be better. What a great way to start 2025!
I am sitting in the conference feeling energized, informed, and eager to return to the bench to serve next week.
The orientation brought together a diverse group of new judges from various regions and backgrounds from across the State, each of us bringing unique perspectives to the table. These conversations were invaluable in terms of sharing best practices, learning about different judicial systems, and discussing the broader trends shaping the legal landscape. There is just a beautiful sense of camaraderie and a renewed commitment to serving the public with integrity and diligence.
The sessions were expertly designed to cover a wide range of topics—from courtroom management to ethical considerations and procedural nuances. There was an emphasis on cultivating fairness, impartiality, and transparency, which are foundational to maintaining public trust in the judicial system.
One of the highlights was hearing from seasoned judges who shared their insights on effective decision-making, managing courtroom dynamics, and the importance of continuous learning. Their experiences underscored the significance of not just upholding the law but also fostering an environment of respect and professionalism. They reminded us that, while every case presents unique challenges, our commitment to justice remains constant.
As I prepare to return to Division 8 next week, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose. Just real excitement to apply the knowledge gained from the orientation, paired with the passion I have to serve and for the work ahead. The judicial career is one of constant growth- I want to serve better so I need to learn and as Governor Kehoe said in his inaugural address, "pray hard, work hard."
With these new tools and perspectives, I look forward to starting the next chapter of my judicial journey with confidence and dedication. The path ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, but it is also full of immense opportunity to make a positive impact on individuals' lives and the broader community to be of service.
Here’s to a successful and fulfilling 2025!
